About höfuðstöðin

Höfuðstöðin is an art and culture center in Reykjavík, Iceland that permanently displays the large-scale multi-sensory installation Chromo Sapiens by Shoplifter / Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir. Höfuðstöðin also features a design shop, café & bar with outdoor seating and the space can be rented for private events.

Meet the artist

Experience the large-scale, immersive installation Chromo Sapiens by Icelandic artist Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir / Shoplifter. The installation invites you to explore your inner landscape through the stimulation of the senses. Afterward, you have a seat in our lounge area where you will have a drink and create your own souvenir to take home.

visiting by bus

On weekdays take bus 16 (toward Árbær / Hraunás) from Hlemmur D bus station. On weekends take bus 15 (toward Mosfellsbær) from Hlemmur C bus station. We recommend using Google Maps or the Strætó App with the destination set to Rafstöðvarvegur 1a. See here.

visiting by car​

Drive east on Vesturlandsvegur and turn right as you see the building on the right, before you get to the exit by N1 gas station. Make a left and another left right away that will take you up towards the building where you can park your car in our parking lot.

visiting by bike

There are many fun bike paths to take as you make your way to Höfuðstöðin. We recommend taking one of the bike paths in Elliðaárdalur that leads to us.

We offer a variety of coffee, tea, alcoholic beverages and light refreshments that can be enjoyed while overlooking the beautiful nature of the valley.

Design store

Our design store features various products designed by Shoplifter and her collaborations with notable brands.

Wheelchair Access

The installation, cafe, gift store and other areas are all equipped with wheelchair access.

Parking

We offer free parking and disabled parking for guests. For large cars and buses we recommend parking in the bus parking spot down the road.

Outdoor Area

We have a large patio overlooking the valley and when weather allows guests can enjoy a beverage outside and kids can play in the nature.

Our location is very central and only a 10 minute drive from downtown Reykjavík.
